Jesus once declared himself the Light of the World (John 9:5) – this is one of the I am statements in John’s Gospel. What is sometimes missed is the context Jesus puts on this - whilst I am in the world, I am the light of the world.
This implies both a time when he will not be physically present in the same way and also a time when he will pass on this responsibility. Indeed, Matthew 5:14 declares that you are the light of the world. This truth has been a founding part of the community of St Paul’s that we are to be light not only to this community but from it to the world. We are to shine for Christ, to be missionary disciples. For those of us who don’t know, this is the inspiration for the artwork at the front of the arena.
Beyond all we do locally there are three things we do to encourage mission.
1. Have a number of key partners in mission - Partners Team
2. Encourage everyone to step out in mission - Stepping Out Team
3. Encourage those personal connections to mission - Short Term Connections
You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill.
