10.03.25 Luke 12:13-21

Prepare

Matthew 6:21 says “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Let’s think for a moment what we consider to be treasures in our life.

Read – Luke 12:13-21

Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”

Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?” Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”

And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’

“Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’

“But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’

“This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”

Reflect

My children are aged 4 and 3 and as a result, any little trinket, piece of paper, miniature toy, ball or random object soon becomes a very treasured item to them. We have a box or two of things that don’t belong to any sort of set place, and just get thrown in together to store the random items. It also seems that said items can be left without being touched often for weeks at a time, but the second they go in the bin, suddenly they are being asked for again!

Many adults are probably the same, holding onto things we don’t really need for the “rainy day” that never comes. Is it time for a clearout?

Become

Jesus prayed “give us today our daily bread”. Let us try to follow Jesus’ example of trusting God to know that He supplies all of our needs. Then we are free instead to focus on being rich toward God.

Do

Are you someone who falls into the trap of materialism? Or maybe there is simply a new opportunity in your life to think more about the spiritual treasure in knowing God and sharing His love.

Practice

God, help us to be generous and follow your leading to give to those we know are in need, resting in the assurance that you are our provider.
