5.03.25 Luke 11:5-13

Prepare

Mark 4:9 says “Then Jesus said, “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.”

Take a moment to pause and ask God to open your ears to His voice.

Read – Luke 11:5-13

Then Jesus said to them, ‘Suppose you have a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say, “Friend, lend me three loaves of bread; a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have no food to offer him.” And suppose the one inside answers, “Don’t bother me. The door is already locked, and my children and I are in bed. I can’t get up and give you anything.” I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity he will surely get up and give you as much as you need.

‘So I say to you: ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

‘Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!’

Reflect

Christmas probably seems like a lifetime ago already, but I know for many families, so much goes into the preparation of gifts for children and grandchildren, siblings and friends. Then there are childrens’ birthdays and other occasions. I know that I can spend ages trying to find the perfect gifts that I know will be appreciated, used well, and enjoyed both those who receive them. Luke 11 verses 11-13 show us that God loves to give us the best gifts, even better than we can ask for.

When we know someone well, we might know just the perfect gift for them, and our passage highlights just how much God, who knows us more deeply and intimately than anyone, gives good gifts to us – his children! The beginning of this passage talks about having “shameless audacity” to ask, and Jesus inviting us to “ask and it will be given to you.”

Become

Read the passage again and put yourself in the shoes of the person Jeus is talking about, going to ask their friend for bread. How do you feel? Is it easy or uncomfortable to ask for food?

Now consider yourself as the friend answering the door. How do you feel when your friend asks for bread?

Do

How often do we come to God and ask Him for things with “shameless audacity” and boldness? Sometimes there can be things that get in the way of us feeling like we can come to Him and ask. Maybe we find it hard to ask a Holy God to do something for us, or perhaps we don’t truly believe that God will give us good gifts.

Father, help us to come to you boldly, knowing that you desire good for us.

Practice

Consider His promise that “how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
